Presidential Search

Message from the Chairman of the Board

Wednesday June 16, 2021

Dear Rice University Community,

President David Leebron announced last month his intention to step down at the end of the academic year on June 30, 2022. Over the next year we will celebrate David’s many achievements and we will also set our sights on the future and the search for Rice’s eighth president. As it emerges from the pandemic, Rice is on an incredible trajectory as one of the leading research universities not just in the U.S. but globally. The next president will build on Rice’s significant strengths to drive excellence across all aspects of the university, while honoring our distinctive values of responsibility, integrity, community and excellence.

The next president will be selected by the Board of Trustees according to the university charter and bylaws. Advising the board is the search committee announced earlier this month. All of the search committee members have demonstrated a strong commitment to Rice and each brings special and unique expertise and experiences to the committee. You can view their bios on this webpage. The Presidential Search Committee will work diligently, on behalf of the entire Rice community, to recruit our university’s next great leader.

We intend to solicit broad input from the Rice community and this webpage is the first step in this process. Please use the “submit feedback” form or the email address listed on that page to reach out to the committee with your input. We will provide you with periodic updates on the committee’s progress.

Thank you for your steadfast support of our university. The future for Rice is bright and we can all take great pride in what we will accomplish together.
